Health: Year 9 Discovery

 Hi there!

Today I will be writing about what I have been doing in Health class for the past couple of weeks.

In Health we were set a task that required us to research a topic of our own choice and display the information we found. Our set success criteria was:

  • Linking answers to the key concepts
  • Described strategies that will improve outcomes in relation to our chosen issue
  • All 5 BIG questions are answered in detail
  • Our work is well presented and we are proud of it

The topic that I chose was brain development in teenagers.

Here is a photo of myself working on my tasks:

Firstly we had to decide what level we would work at to achieve and then we chose 5 BIG questions we would answer about our chosen topic. Once we had our 5 BIG questions we started to research about them. From there we had to decide what our final presentation would be. I chose to make/create a Kahoot quiz about teenage brain development. I chose to do this because I felt it would be a good, interactive way of showing my learning. I have learned that these strategies are helpful to use if they are struggling and want the best time of their teenage years:

  • Thinking before you act
  • Surrounding yourself with good influences
  • Talking to adults when you need support
Here is a planning sheet I had to keep track of my work:

Here is screenshot of my completed quiz:

It was challenging when I had to find answers to the 5 BIG questions I chose as it was difficult to find some of the information I needed.
I coped with the challenge by researching more and asking my teacher about where I could find good, reliable information.
Next time I will try to work more at home to reach my timeline quicker.
I am really proud of the questions I have answered and the work I put in at school and in my own time.

Lastly, here is a picture of what I am most proud of from my Health Discovery:

Health

Hi there!

Today I will be writing about how to get help regarding depression in Health.

Agencies to help a young person in Christchurch:

  • Depression Support Network
  • Stepping Stone Trust
Depression Support Network:
On their website you have the option of taking a quiz/test to see if you have symptoms of depression. Also, you can read about how to tell if someone is suffering from depression or not.

Stepping Stone Trust:
This agency has many options for youth help. They can come to you or you can go to see them, one of their services featuring Support Workers.

These services would help improve your mental/emotional wellbeing by being a place you can go to talk to a someone you can trust as well as become happier.

Three people at Hornby High School a student could talk to is/are:

  • Counselor
  • Youth Workers
  • Trusted Staff Member

Health: Fake v Real Friends

Hi there!

Today I will be writing real friends versus fake friends. We researched about what makes a person a genuine friend and what makes a person a fake friend. We did this by watching a video explaining this and also coming up with ideas ourselves, either from personal experience or what we thought a fake/real friend would act like.
Here are some examples below:

Fake Friends are:
  • Are being mean to you behind your back.
  • Hang out with you when they can’t find anyone else.
  • Lose their temper easily.
  • They call/message you when they need something.
  • Try to control you & change you.
  • Are jealous of your achievements/try to bring you down when you achieve something.
  • Don’t like your other friends.
  • Spread rumours about you.

Real Friends are:

  • Kind to you.
  • Stick up for if someone is being rude to you or being rude behind your back.
  • Constantly in contact with you.
  • Accept you for who you are.
  • Celebrate your achievements.
  • Remember things about you.
  • Don’t judge your other friends.
  • Treat you with respect.
  • Encourages you and doesn’t put you down.
  • Don’t get angry at you.
  • Don’t harm you.

Health

Hi There
Today I will be explaining what Spiritual Wellbeing is about. Spiritual Wellbeing or Taha Wairua is about principles or standards of behaviour. Or, what you think is important in life. One of the many things you can do to make your Taha Wairua stronger is performing Random Acts of Kindness (RAK for short). We had to send a positive, kind message to someone from our family/friends, along the lines of 'thanks for being a great friend' or just a simple 'thank you'.

Below is a RAK I sent to my friend:
'Thanks for texting me, I really enjoyed chatting with you! We should catch up soon!'

It is important to show kindness to others because not only does it make their day it can make yours too. Being kind to others can make your day by making you feel good that you've brightened someone else's day. Being kind makes you a better person and Random Acts of Kindness are a great way to be kind, anyone can be kind; it's not that hard.

"When you are kind to someone in trouble, you'll hope they remember and be kind to someone else. And it'll become like wildfire."

-Whoopi Goldberg
